Whenever we visit a shopping mall or a café, we don't hesitate to take advantage of the open WiFi signal to browse for a while. That practice is convenient… but not as secure, to say the least. A malicious element could be 'reading' connections, while public networks often impose access blocks to certain services. The folks at Cloudflare seem to have recognized the problem, and in response launched WARP, a free VPN without extreme limits, which protects our mobile browsing sessions.
It is not surprising to think that mobile devices are unprotected. Depending on the configuration, they can easily connect to any available network, something we definitely do not recommend. An open WiFi signal seems harmless, but in reality we know nothing about its parameters, what data the captive portal presents, and what its access requirements are (email addresses, surveys, etc.).
One of the best solutions is to adopt a VPN service, with all our connections encrypted and isolated. The problem is that traditional VPNs tend to be expensive. Free offers impose very strict limits (for example, a handful of megabytes per day) or collect information. Earlier this year, the folks at Cloudflare announced an alternative called WARP. The waiting list to access the service exceeded two million users, and its development took a while… but it is finally here.
WARP: Free VPN for smartphones and tablets
The main benefit of WARP is that its free mode has no restrictions regarding the amount of bandwidth. All your links and DNS requests will be protected always, preventing networks between your device and the applications you use from spying on you. The difference is that WARP prioritizes security, not anonymity. If your plan is to hide your IP address or use a different one to bypass a geolocation block, WARP will not work for you.

To get the VPN you must download the official 1.1.1.1 app from Cloudflare and activate it there. The app allows you to activate only the company's 1.1.1.1 DNS, or combine it with WARP. However, the developers know that there are bugs. Connectivity issues with certain services and battery drain are the most common complaints. In the interface, there is a dedicated icon (the bug) to report errors. If you find something strange, do not hesitate to share it through that mechanism.
Still, the tests I ran on my Samsung Galaxy S4 (with a few attitude and battery problems, I must add) were positive, and I haven't found any flaws so far. Now, the big question: How does Cloudflare make money with this? Besides WARP, it also offers a faster, unlimited variant called WARP Plus, with an average price of five dollars per month (the exact amount depends on the region and the platform).
