Sometimes we have so many stories in our heads that the only option is to let them escape in some way. It doesn't matter if they are short or long: the main thing is that they find a new space, whether on a piece of paper or in a text document. If you choose the second option, I imagine you want a simple program instead of a traditional processor, to avoid distractions and conflicts. That's when a classic like WriteMonkey comes in. We first talked about it in 2011, but now that it has a new version, it's worth a review.
In October 2014 we presented the Hemingwrite project, which sought to create the typewriter of the 21st century. For legal reasons, the device is now called Freewrite, but its central goal is the same: to offer the user a pure, simple, distraction-free resource when writing. The real problem is... its price. The standard edition costs a prohibitive and almost absurd 549 dollars. Alternatives? Something similar, only at software level. One of the strongest candidates is the WriteMonkey processor.
Its interface is nothing like other conventional processors. In fact, its options menu is hidden behind a shortcut (Ctrl+Space), and we must memorize several shortcuts since the program prioritizes keyboard use.
Despite its apparent simplicity, WriteMonkey boasts full markdown compatibility and support for plugins (some of them are freemium). If all you want is to write, you can ignore both elements without difficulty, but the right column of the interface is very interesting. There you can drag small text snippets, change their color and size, strikethrough, edit in parallel, and more.
The latest version of WriteMonkey is 3.0.10, released in August of this year. However, nothing prevents you from getting build 2.7, even lighter and simpler (the zip file does not exceed 9 megabytes), but lacking support. Personally, I am more used to WriteMonkey 2.7, although I hope to complete the transition to the new version very soon. Download a copy of WriteMonkey and give it a try. Maybe it will surprise you.
